Apple Week

Thanks to Crunchy Chicken I dried a decent batch of cinnamon apple slices last week. They are already half gone and I need to make more!

And then thanks to Suzanne McMinn at Chickens In The Road I made a tasty batch of Crock Pot Apple Butter, only I left out the rum and raisins this time around.

Paddock Boy sampled the tiny leftovers from the canning and decided it was worth opening a jar for immediate consumption! And I sent a jar home with the in-laws the other day since my M-I-L helped by occupying the Little Cowboy much of last week. They even made an apple pie! I unfortunately knocked a jar off the counter and it crashed on the floor. :( Another jar went home with friends this evening... At this rate I guess no apple butter is going to make it to Christmas for presents this year unless I make some more.

Liz, I think there should be a "most mouth-watering blog" award. You would win it, hands down. Now I can't stop thinking of apples and cinnamon. YUM!

I swear that you should blame the other bloggers I mentioned! Seriously. And there are many more out there, too! They all are the ones tempting me into the life of serious domesticity! My grammas would be proud. And I know my mom and MIL are glad that they aren’t the ones doing the canning this year! And I have more than enough to go around this year. If someone wants to swap, I am all for it!

I might have to try them both. Mr. Fry loves apple butter and those dried apple slices look YUMMY. I'll have to check out the recipes. I have never canned/preserved anything.

Thought of you on Sunday as I made another pot of beans. This time, I used ground sirloin as the meat -- very hearty and very little fat. Did you ever try it?

Well never mind then! I don't have a dehydrator, nor do I have a food mill. Oh well...

Those cinnamon apple slices would be great to try with the kids at school!! And I loved apple butter as a kid. Even though I didn't like butter and I didn't like the name "apple butter." :) I haven't had it in years!

I haven't done the chili recipe yet, but plan on it this weekend as we are having a Pumpkin Carving Party and chili feed/contest.

No need for a food dehydrator. An oven on low heat cracked open and a fan blowing across the front works just as well. And I think if you peeled the apples you wouldn't need a food mill as you could push the pulp through a strainer or just slow cook the apples and keep stirring until they break down. Just a guess. I used a food mill type attachment on my KitchenAid stand mixer (see the jelly posts).

PG, you might need to make sure none of your kids at school have a cinnamon allergy. I know that it is becoming more common.

Ok, I am going to have to try drying some apples now, especially since I went to the apple festival this weekend

None of that yummy stuff would last a week in my house.
My 3 kidlets would gobble those dried apples in less than a day, and the apple butter would be gone by me, in a week!

Alas our apple trees were dormant this year due to a late freeze and hail storm this past winter.
Maybe next year!
